  5. The cover art indicates that these were published in The Daily Worker. The Daily Worker was that official publication of the American Communist Party. OP says they started in 1934, which was pretty much the depths of the depression. So, instead of being timeless humor, these are really official propaganda of the Communist Party at the time when the viability of the US was being openly questioned by its own citizens. The portrayals claim to be humorous but are instead political propaganda.
