Sean Connery Rocked a Red Mankini In 1974 Sci-Fi Movie “Zardoz”

Zardoz (1974) is one of the weirdest movies ever made. Set in the year 2293 on a post-apocalyptic Earth, Zardoz is a sci-fi movie written, produced and directed by John Boorman and stars Sean Connery in the main role as Zed, who dressed in a red mankini, his plaited ponytail flowing in the breeze, escapes the thrall of the Eternals and smashes their regime.

Sean Connery wasn’t much in demand at the time so he decided to get some quick cash and recognition by doing this film. Little did he know that the photo of him posing in this ridiculous embarrassing outfit will become iconic…

As a matter of fact this ridiculous movie has gathered a cult following over the years thanks to Sean Connery’s awkward outfit and “it’s so bad that it’s good” rating of the movie itself. Every year hundreds of people cosplay as Zed and keep the memory of Zardoz alive.

  1. Yeah, this is not a mainstream Sci-Fi movie, but yet much better than many modern alleged Sci-Fi movies that are the same old with fresher CGI. So, yes, rather dress up as Zed.

  2. Not one of Sean’s besht films…

  3. That’s what he wore to face down hurricane Dorian. 🌀

  4. Sean Connery once said “Ash I wash walking through my houshe, a book fell on me. I had only myshelf to blame…”

  5. Webley Mk VI, .455, top breaks. A real man’s pistol, that. And a real man it is holding the weapon.

  6. In the first picture, he is saying
“I am James Bond, with a long pigtail and a Zapata moustache, wearing a mankini, thigh-boots and bandoliers full of bullets that are too big to fit in this pistol!”
    “Your argument is invalid!”

  7. I bet the hurricane would have geared into reverse and took off to the atlantic if Trump would have waited for it at the coast – wearing this.

  8. Are they the right bullets for that gun?

  9. This movie is a masterpiece despite the weird aesthetics.

  10. It was good enough for Rick and Morty to do a parody of it.

  11. Great. I can never un-see that.

  12. That’s why it paused over the Bahamas- it couldn’t stop laughing.

  13. Absolutely LOVE the final pic!
The guy has replaced Zardoz’ fundoshi / ???? with run-of-the-mill tighty-reddies
His black thigh-high “boots” are simply tied-up garbage bags
The bandoliers have been replaced by cheap, ultra-cheesy suspenders
That old-time pistol is now a glue-gun — with the requisite electrical cord
And it’s all topped-off by a menacing look of: “Whatchu lookin’ at…?!?!”
    Absolutely brilliant!
Even though I’ve always loved Sean Connery, there can be little doubt that he contributed greatly to a hugely bizarre film. And, lest anybody get too full of themselves, we can all count on internet memes to bring us back to earth. Sometimes, as in this case, it’s a crash landing.
