The Funniest Twitter Reactions To The New Black Ariel

When news spread that African American actress Halle Bailey would play Ariel in “The Little Mermaid” live action, the film received backlash. Some people could not fathom how a fictional character could be played by a young black woman. But there’s no reason Ariel couldn’t be black. There’s no historical accuracy to live up to here. Ariel is a fish person. Mermaids do not actually exist. Chill.

  1. Hi, my name is Donald, the legitimate President of the United States.
I’ve been hearing lots, l mean lots of disparities about my removal of
a few personal letters from the White House.
The truth is I did not take any, how the FBI located many boxes of
documents at Mar-A-Lago is mystery. Those boxes contained old
running shoes, used gym gear, and maybe a few water bottles. You
people should stop listening to all this false news. If you hear lies
day after day you may begin to believe them.
Gotta go, have an important phone call with a world leader very soon.

  2. The problem is not the fish woman. The problem is the black hearted stone faced woke mob that has infiltrated our institutions and is grimly squeezing out the decent people.

  5. Cultural appropriation obviously goes in two ways. But one way is ok?
Instead of making European character black, fictional or historic, find African stories. There are plenty of African fairy tales and legends. Enough material to make plenty of movies. With black actors as heroes and villains. And white people will watch it, too!

  6. Once again America f…s everything up. Stop stealing our European stories. You are NOT Europeans, no matter if you are half English, quarter German, 1/16 Italian and a pinch of French. No one cares. Find your own stories. Americans making and distorting European fairy tales is cultural appropriation, too.

  10. So, why do other “fish” have to be black? Rights and duties go both ways.

  11. So, just imagine if a famous black character would be replaced by a white skin person in a remake. E.g. Blade, Morpheus (matrix), Black Panther, nick fury (marvel), Storm (X-Men).
If this should happen, nobody should feel that it’s wrong or so, as to quote some people “it’s a fictional character, so who cares that they replaced her with a person of different colour”

Well, guess I will get a huge amount of downvotes.
So, for anyone who does: you are a hypocrite!

  12. My lady at Kalorama Street, Susan Rice is running things. She has my back and my 30 million pages of “artifacts” will never be confiscated.

  13. She still looks white, same face structure as a northern European. They only adjusted the tint. It’s disgusting.

  14. Trudeau has spawned black face on many occasions. Mind you he looked
    real stupid doing so.
Me thinks he has mommy issues.

  15. H.C. Andersen did write she had white hands and skin as soft as rose petals and blue eyes.
So it is understandable that some people are upset.

  19. This outcry about black mermaid was fabricated by Disney to hide that the movie is garbage. My sympathies to the actress who was thrown under the bus for no reason at all.

  24. Oh you poor thing. Are the free people making you uncomfortable?

Remember back in the 60s? The young people wanted to be different and free while the old folks were just holding them back. Boomers became what they hated. Maybe it’s time you stopped complaining about the younger generations. You know what Dylan said – ” Don’t criticize what you can’t understand, for the times they are a changin.”

  25. Funny how every little thing becomes something to argue about on the internet.

There may not even be THAT many people who give af about the color of mermaids, but everyone has to chime in and insult the right or the left because of it.

Seriously. Couldn’t we all just get along? United we stand, but we’re headed for a fall.

  26. I guess that’s called cultural appropriation…
But as long as this happens over European or Asian cultural it’s ok. Just don’t you dare to do the same with afro American or Indian….

And they should have at least chosen Terry crews or Samuel l Jackson as King Triton instead of Javier Bardem. Its a bit strange if the father is Hispanic and the daughter isn’t at least a mixblood.

  27. Minimizing, don’t make a mountain out of a mole hole.
Who cares this is simply entertainment for immature
minds who aren’t yet perverted by their so called adult
    mentors.

  28. @Lenard:
This is meant as a critic not of the movie, but today’s society and this kind of companies.
Disney surely did not choose a 56 years old actress of color for Ariel because Halle fits best into the role.. this is all about trying to fit into the whole political correctness scene. They could have chosen an actual young red haired woman representing the main character.

This happens quite so often, especially in Netflix’s live action adaptions. That they replaced character with actors that were far off the original.
Interestingly this only happens to originally white characters.

If our society would be truely PC, such things wouldn’t happen or happen both ways. But in our society of social media, people are always desperate to “support the minorities”. But it’s not actually supporting minorities. They all don’t give a f… about low wages of certain groups in certain regions, they still buy clothes made under horrendous conditions in India/Pakistan/Bangladesh etc., there still is police violence to be found in the US.
But instead of actual action against these social structures or having to sacrifice anything, the people prefer to have stuff like…. A black Ariel, portrayed by a super rich old US American actress. Because this is PC and will solve all problems related to suppression of certain groups.
And no… This is not “a start”… A start would have been filming an actual tale from afro American culture or something like that. This is just a cash grab by Disney, nothing more.

  29. Nick Fury was originally a white character with a full head of hair. The Little Mermaid is of Danish origin. Most likely she would have been a blonde, not a redhead (only 2% of the Danish population are gingers).
People think version they know is the ONLY version. It kills me that a guy who wrote at least 2 epic poems is the lesser known Homer.

  30. Did you just mistake this Halle for Halle Berry intentionally or did you really think Berry was the live action mermaid?

Also, why is her hair red in the movie picture?

  31. It is a live action remake of stuff Disney made. Changing some of the stuff, obviously. But also obviously not changing it for artistic value, but for wokeness reasons.

And it always seems to be cast changes to Black they are so proud of. Why not make Ariel more Asian. Or Middle Eastern. Or that minority in the US, the Natives.

Why not just create new stuff with “POC” protagonists … that can be white-washed in a remake a decade later ;-)

Or make a complete reimagination! Ariel was supposed to fall in love with a prince, irrc. Like monarchy. The stuff Europeans had. She could fall in love with a fruit seller businessman in modern times. Oh, wait, Disney already did that 1984.

  32. Beyond the race discussion about casting, Disney’s live-action remakes of animated classics appears to be a simple money grab. The last several movies: Mulan, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast were awful. The latest Pinocchio remake is getting raked over the coals for how terrible the script is. Disney should consider making new movies with good scripts rather than the lazy path of doing live action remakes of existing stories. Super lazy making re-heated left overs.

  33. There were white slaves, too. Kidnapped from ships and sold in North Africa. Never forget that.

  34. There are so many African, Asian and whatsoever stories. I would love to see (animated) movies about them and learn about them – in their real cultural context. But, no, Disney has to ride the horse until it’s dead. Zombie horses.

  35. Just reverse them(fish top, human bottom), like on The Slayers, and nobody will care who plays the human half. Except maybe SirMixAlot.

  36. I have trouble wrapping my 56 year old brain around this shit. Are people really wasting their time thinking about a fictional character and not sex?

  37. I forgot to add that my 56 year old brain has trouble rapping at all!

  38. It is quite obvious this is not written by the Cheeto, he couldn’t write anything with a complete sentence or punctuation.

  39. These comments and subsequent comments are BS. I am white and neither myself or any of my friends care what color Ariel is. Most of you are attacking a fictional enemy that someone created to create division. Please be realistic or at least act with human compassion. Stop drinking the koolaid.
