I once bought a pair of high-heeled work boots (the light-tan, almost yellow boots that some construction workers wear, but with stilleto-style heels). I got them real cheap at a thrift store. I didn’t intend to wear them in public, but they looked new, so I was going to give them as a gag gift.

I wore them in public once. A guy I was dating asked me why I didn’t dress up like other girls. I pointed out that I was, in fact, wearing a very pretty dress and dress sandals. He clarified that he meant tight-fitting, cleavage-showing tops, short-skirts and the “pointy heel shoes”. I was extremely offended, but I pretended not to be. I even agreed to go on another date, promising to wear something more like what he described. I went home and fashioned an old, red-plaid shirt into a low-cut, tight-fitting blouse. I turned a pair of denim jeans into a mini-skirt, and paired the outfit with those hideous, high-heeled work boots. I looked like a sexy lesbian lumberjack. My date was not impressed. He loudly insulted me, so I loudly said that his opinion was not credible, then I sipped my margarita and stared at him until he left. Four men and two women gave me their numbers that night. I ended up giving the whole outfit to one of the women from the bar.
