Well, I got the son to be 27 and the dad 99, which seems even verier. Not (Saturday, 2 Jan 2010)
you forgot to add five years to the dad's age on the second part, so the dad cannot be 99 (the "in five years" in the beginning applies to the second part too). fufuu (Saturday, 2 Jan 2010)

22 and 79 dad is obviously a dick to have 22 year old son that does not know his age Random (Friday, 8 Jan 2010)
NO, that's six times nine. duh. Work it out: (Sunday, 3 Jan 2010) Reply
The in 5 years the Father will be == 3 times the son's age in 6 years: Father + 5 = 3 * (Son + 6) Father + 5 = 3Son + 18 Father = 3Son + 13 Also we know that the Father in five years (+5) will be == to four times the Son LAST year: Father + 5 = (Son - 1) * 4 Father + 5 = 4Son - 4 Father = 4Son - 9 You can then Substitute the first solution for "Father" (Remember: Father = 3Son +13) and get: 4Son - 9 = 3Son +13 (4Son - 3Son) - 9 = (3Son - 3Son) + 13 Son - 9 = 13 Son = 22 Then plug '22' back into one of the above: Father + 5 = 3 * (Son + 6) Father + 5 = 3 * (22 + 6) Father + 5 = 84 Father = 79 and Son = 22 Extra Credit: Father knocked his mom up when he was 56 or 57 (oddly they never seemed to ask that last bit when we had these word problems in school ... ) kainim (Sunday, 3 Jan 2010)
you can't answer if you don't know the kid's age, but i'm guessing 6 to 8 years blood (Sunday, 3 Jan 2010)
Yes, you can, because you have 2 equations. Go back to school. Sad (Sunday, 3 Jan 2010)
Hey work it out- you don't get out much do you? blood (Monday, 4 Jan 2010)
@Sad: is it because he wrote a long comment or because he knows high school math? Jesus (Sunday, 3 Jan 2010) Reply
This comic is obviously made by Americans... that explains the harsh logics of it... : ) Jesus Freak (Monday, 4 Jan 2010)

My guess from the kid's handwriting is he was 7-9 last year and makes "daddy" 24-31... Wait, there is something wrong here, either this kid's handwriting sucks more than it should be at his age, or dad is fresh from college, therefore contradicting the fact he has a job as a math teacher. /Meh, I'm no good at over-analyzing stupid stuff... Seriously (Sunday, 3 Jan 2010) Reply
The child cannot be 0-21 years old. Only 22. If you use any other number, the results of "four times as old as you were last year" and "three times as old as you will be in six years" differ. And according to the comic they shouldn't. The only logical conclusion is that the son is a 22year old retarded midget and the dad is a 79 year old dick. AnotherMathTeacher (Monday, 4 Jan 2010) Reply
This is one of the math jokes again: Boy is better at math than it's math teaching Dad! Misanthrapturous (Wednesday, 3 Feb 2010)
"Boy is better at math than it's math teaching Dad!" That looks like a language joke to me. Amanda (Monday, 4 Jan 2010) Reply
The previous posts are assuming that there are 2 equations, what he is saying could also be: Father + 5 = 4(son +1) + 3(son + 6) or Father = 7(son) + 9 Then the age of the son would be required to solve for Father... let's say he is 7, then his father is 58. That’s a usual 4th grade math problem of Soviet education at 70th (whole HS education was just 10 grades (6 days per week though) but what the quality!) Dad is 51. Son is 15 and as a HS student could be called as d***. Need that solution? nikkis bff (Tuesday, 5 Jan 2010)
wrong. in 6 years kid would be 21, Dad 57. Mathematician (Wednesday, 6 Jan 2010)
Read carefully second part of the problem AND relate it to the first part AND to the question!!! That tricky English is the point here - without logic it's not affordable even for English native speakers. That's how you teach math - on good problems. Mathematician (Wednesday, 6 Jan 2010)
This is not a joke but excellent algebraic problem. Unfortunately, d*** is the most attractive part for many. Seriously (Wednesday, 6 Jan 2010) Reply
Are you people retarded? Honestly, learn some math before you post your answers. And while you're at it, take a loot at "work it out" comment. That is how you solve the problem. There are 2 equations because the dad said "and" not "plus". Jumping jesus, bunch of americans Seriously You Are An Ass (Thursday, 7 Jan 2010)

It's 22 and 79!! In mathematica: Solve[(dad + 5) == 4*(son - 1) && (dad + 5) == 3*(son + 6), {son, dad}] {{son -> 22, dad -> 79}} Fail age. AriMarie (Thursday, 7 Jan 2010) Reply
They actually updated it when they realized the math didn't quite work out. http://www.qgmindpolice.com/wp-conten...1-15-mathdad2.png mm (Sunday, 31 Jan 2010)
so son is 8 and dad is 37 is the new answer? 4(son+2) = 5 son son = 8 dad = 5x8-3 = 37 |
