In 70's all the scientists were telling everyone the next ice age was coming, and everyone believed them... and guess what happened?

No, the world will be saved by the ETS,
the Emissions Trading Scheme,
or as it should be known
the Extra Tax Scam
No (Wednesday, 28 Oct 2009)
Just...No. As a scientist in a community of scientists, I can tell you some pitiful excuse at ;egislation isn't going to even make a dent in this. If the human species were to stop using fossil fuels ENTIRELY from this moment forward, the planet would still be irrevocably changed from our disastrous actions.
And the Ice Age is still coming. As lame as it was, Day After Tomorrow was relatively accurate as far as the long-term effects (though it wouldn't all happen in a day) of Global "warming".
gestop (Wednesday, 28 Oct 2009)
on the left it says "TIME in partnership with CNN" from june of 74. CNN wasn't founded until 1980.

Hey, American dork, keep burning oil (Saudi oil, btw) and you will hurt us all. You are so ignorant you are not worth discussing with.
cmg (Wednesday, 28 Oct 2009)
exactly, enough with the polar bear bullshit. They are increasing in population. Ask the people who live in the area!!!
btw, isn't it funny how the true polar bear experts (ones without an agenda) and local Inuit leaders who agree that they are increasing were "uninvited" from the international conferences and omitted from research?

In the 1970s there was a tiny fraction of the information available today. Saying that a prediction from the 1970s was wrong automatically means that today's evidence should be ignored is incredibly stupid.

Hey Lee buy a gun! Have an accident.
Eek (Monday, 26 Oct 2009) Reply
They're both right. Over at least the last million years there have been regular cycles of ice ages and warming periods. Politicians just want another excuse to take more of your money.
Brent (Monday, 26 Oct 2009) Reply
The whole "global-cooling" was actually the result of poor journalism and misquoting. A closer look at the climate literature in the 1970's will show that the majority of climatologists predicated global warming and the cooling folks were in the minority (National Defense University Research Directorate, 1978.) Today, however, a consensus has emerged with more than 1000 scientific organizations worldwide.

What is wrong with people?
Global warming is people induced or not, but the fact remains - it is possible, that this climate change will result in melting ice (and we know as hell we won't care for 2 m extra water. no Netherlands, we don't like you, so you don't get a vote). rising water might stop Gulf stream and shit will happen and woila - little Ice age .
(I hope we'll have talking mammonths and sabretoothed tigers, or I'll be very pissed.)
Dutchman (Tuesday, 27 Oct 2009)
Hey, we really don't care... We've been claiming land from the see that is 5 meters below sea-level and build our cities in it. Surely we can handle another 2 meters... At the very worst we can always simply dig-up Belgium and raise our soil.

Notice it's not called Global warming anymore. Now it's Climate change.
Smart scientist dude: "Well the Earth is no longer getting warmer but cooler so...uh...be worried, be very worried"
It's all a ploy to bring cap and trade in. Don't just be led blindly into the brain washing. Learn what they are really after. Take your climate change and stick it up Al Gores butthole.
Al Gore (Tuesday, 27 Oct 2009) Reply
Didn't we have an ice age a long time ago? So in reality, global warming started a long time ago...before we started burning fossil fuels.
Global warming, or cooling is for real. Look at history it changes all the time.
Man made climate change is the bull shit.
Data base (Tuesday, 27 Oct 2009) Reply
A 32 year data base to argue that global warming is coming and that research from 1974 is wrong is stupid. Scientests from 1974 had the same multiple-eon data as scientests today. Adding 32 years does not radically change the truth. Conclusions from 1974 are more correct. Todays "conclusions" are politically motivated. More momey to be made selling hotter climate and giving central government more reason to curb individual freedoms. Demos want hotter climate to be true. Al Gore is their God.

catlover (Tuesday, 27 Oct 2009)
Climate change is real. It's real since the very first day. But it's a lie that it's man made. 10000 years ago europe was covered by ice, now it's gone. Was this caused by the Neanderthal?
Eh (Tuesday, 27 Oct 2009) Reply
There's no contradiction. If global warming causes the north pole to melt then all the fresh water that is released may cause the gulf stream to stop. Then there would be a new ice age. The gulf stream is what makes much of northeast North America and northern Europe inhabitable.
Dreeze (Tuesday, 27 Oct 2009)
Aaaah! There's that nonsense again: 'Melted fresh water is lighter than salt water and will force hot water down and thus the heat conveyor that is the gulf stream, will stop!'

This is complete nonsense: Unlike layers of hot and cold water, fresh and salt water do not remain separated. Fresh and salt water immediatly mingles into somewhat less salty water. The saltness of the oceans, however, is not determined by the total amount of salt in the water at any given time: There are huge salt deposits on the ocean floor that will dissolve in the water as much as possible. So any influx of fresh water will simply cause some of the salt deposits to dissolve and restore the balance.

Hot water on the other hand is much lighter than cold water and does remain in separate layers. When larger amounts of cold melting water are released in the ocean at the cold end of the gulfstream, the cold water will simply sink faster and speed up the conveyor..
joao (Wednesday, 28 Oct 2009)

"Hot water on the other hand is much lighter than cold water and does remain in separate layers. When larger amounts of cold melting water are released in the ocean at the cold end of the gulfstream, the cold water will simply sink faster and speed up the conveyor.. "
so you are saying... the Gulf stream wil become so fast we'll actually burn here to death? Oh, the horrors just won't end!!!!
tnt (Wednesday, 28 Oct 2009)
joao
if only writing scientific reports would be so easy as to say "wrong" and present a wikipedia link
Dreeze (Wednesday, 28 Oct 2009)
@ Joao
A halocline is a vertical gradient of salinity in water. If you had read my argument you would have realised that I was telling you there are no separate horizontal layers of different salinity, as needed to disrupt the conveyor. Besides, haloclines appear almost exclusively in enclosed or semi-enclosed bodies of water, not in the middle of an ocean.
If only the climate-scaremongers would argue based on coherent facts instead of convenient bits of information taken out of context.

Politics has been a factor in anything science related since science was anything important. It didn't suddenly happen in the last 32 years.
Also we could be at the start of a global ice age. Thing is they happen over thousands of years.
Lastly if you wanted to stop global warming you could just stop using oil... buuut people would rather pay more to live than give up the luxuries.

Scientists keep looking for new data, that's why their opinions change. They change because they know more.
