The funny part was, politicians took advantage of ethnic divisions & got us to quit melting.
It actually used to work pretty well.
My own heritage is Italian, German, Danish, French-Swiss, English, and Irish.
When I was growing up, it was no big deal.

This has nothing to do with "the melting pot." It's a ref to the deep south. He has a confederate flag because a lot of the south still hasn't gotten over losing the civil war/ looks at it as a symbol of southern pride.

What I said is that what it symbolizes. The civil war was barely over slavery anyway. The flag even less so at this point. It's a way of saying "I'm from the south and I'm proud of that fact!" Not, "lets go round up some ******* and enslave em! Yehaw!"

Actually, 'melting pot' means the state where various cultures lose their identity and gravitate towards one, unified metaculture. So it is more like European Union than United States, where divisions are pretty distinct. If you're for cultural diversity, 'melting pot' is definitely not the thing you want.

@Anon - Not only to Obama. 'Hispanic' and 'White'/'Caucasian' have been a different ethnicities as long as I remember. It is based on assumption that 'Hispanics' are actually of mixed Spanish/Indian heritage but a) this is what 'Mixed' category is for, b) creoles are a minority among North American Hispanics (South America is another matter). No one in his right mind would call a Spaniard anything else than white.
