No mystery. I was inspired by the Gay Pride rainbow when I created the Apple logo. Apple dumped it in 1998 because they were afraid it would alienate more conservative buyers. I think that was a mistake - those people were never Apple customers anyway. But you know old Steve.

Rainbow logo with an apple that has 1 bite taken out of it. The father of modern computing, Alan Turing, committed suicide by apple, after being convicted of being gay by the brits. It's pretty clear that Jobs was making a tribute to the guy.
