Skallagrim (Monday, 18 Feb 2013)
@Trollolol: You obviously don`t know shit about guns and gun laws in Norway, so don`t pretend that you do. Norway is close to the top of the list when it comes to guns per capita. A large percentage of Norwegians, including me, own guns and use them, we just don`t use them to shoot each other, we`re happy to leave that to you. That one crazy terrorist attacked, could have happened anywhere. Breivik`s guns were legal, and he was member of a shooting club, as you have to be here to get to buy a handgun. He never did any shooting at the club though, unfortunately as it might have been possible for other members to discover his craziness.
Can I have a CCP here? No, and I don`t miss it, I don`t want a quarrel with an idiot to escalate to the point that he starts to shoot at me. Can I buy an assault rifle? No, but tens of thousands of people in Heimevernet (Home Guard) have them at home. Can I buy a rifle? Yes, with a permit, and it must be registered, not a big deal actually. Shotgun? For many decades, anyone over 18 has been able to buy one without a permit, so no problem.
So how many gun killings are there in this country per year? Around 2-3, last year there were 3, 2 of the victims were foreign gang members in the Oslo area (one Polish, one Pakistani). If this was the US, there would be around 80-100 times more murders by firearms here. The difference is gun culture, not the number of guns.
Remember the Haribo picture a while ago, Arsch mit ohren? That`s what you are called in Germany if you talk just shit. So before you make any claims about things you know nothing about, check first.

Trollolol (Monday, 18 Feb 2013)The fact remains, that crime level depends on many more factors than just gun ownership. If you want to really see connection between the two, you have to look at changes induced by increasing/decreaseing control of guns. And that almost invariantly comes out in favour of gun ownership.

Anon (Monday, 18 Feb 2013)
Failed logic! Try ENFORCING the laws on the books (too many already...). Furthermore, criminals BY DEFINITION do *not* follow laws...so WHY would new laws which infringe on rights of law-abiding citizens help? Fail, child, FAIL.
Skallagrim (Monday, 18 Feb 2013)
@Trollolol: Took a look at your link and found statistics over total murder rate, not just firearm-related, as we were discussing here. Don`t you know the difference? While Lithuanians do have quite a bit of Mafia-related crime, there really aren`t many murders committed with firearms (f.ex. 6 in 2010). Also, in a country as small as Lithuania, the numbers will vary a lot from a year to another. I would prefer to look at the average over a decade. Compared to 2010, the 2012 figures for Lithuania looks very high indeed, but we can see that if we pull out the firearm-related murders from those figures you found, we get another picture. USA: 3,2 murders by firearm per 100,000 people. Lithuania: 0,24/100,000 (2010 figure 0,18), about one thirteenth of the US 2012 result. It was in your link, but of course that doesn`t matter if you don`t understand what you`re looking for.
Trollolol (Tuesday, 19 Feb 2013)
No, it is you who misunderstood me. What I was trying to convey is that violent crime rate does not depend on gun ownership. Guns don't kill people, people do. Less access to guns only means that victims will die slower and more painful death by stabbing/strangling/drowning, you name it. If a murderer is determined to kill, there's nothing that can stop him - well, maybe a gun can.

Perhaps an occasional psych evaluation?
LogiC (Tuesday, 19 Feb 2013) ReplyIn Australia we have almost no gun homicides, there has been 1 or 2 mass shootings since the gun ban and the only people that have guns are the outlaws. In America there is mass shootings nearly every month, the accidental gun manslaughter/homicide rate is probably higher than Australia's total homicide rate.
Did you know most people survive stabbings? I would rather a burglar came into my house with a knife than a gun, because with the knife at least I know I have a good chance of living.
Oh yeah I believe it is legally bought guns that are used in nearly all mass shootings in America.
I don't think I've ever seen one of those outlaws with a gun, since they tend to keep to themselves.
George (Saturday, 13 Apr 2013)
+1 point to you good sir.
Stranded in Sonoma (Tuesday, 19 Feb 2013) ReplyI have a right to defend myself. It is my RIGHT TO CHOOSE to determine just what level of defense I require. If you can tell me that I can't have a firearm for self defense, then the right of self defense isn't mine, it's yours. But we've already established it's mine. Therefore, YOU HAVE NO INPUT INTO MY CLAIM AND EXERCISE OF MY RIGHT TO SELF DEFENSE. I am not allowed to indiscriminately shoot people; that's called murder. But they are not allowed to indiscriminately attack me with impunity. That is, I have a right to defend myself and I determine what is the level of appropriate response and force necessary to secure that right. YOU ARE NOT INVOLVED IN THAT DECISION AND CANNOT BE BECAUSE IT IS NOT YOUR RIGHT, IT IS MINE.
The Supreme Court of the United States affirmed that your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms means that every citizen has the right to own a firearm for personal defense. This was stated clearly in the following two cases:
District of Columbia v Heller (554 US 570)
(visit link)McDonald v City of Chicago (561 US 3025)
(visit link)If you haven't read those decisions, I suggest you do. They prove the right of self-defense with historical precedence. You can bleat all you like about the lie that gun control reduces crime. It does not. It MAY reduce death by shootings, but the amount of other crime increases in gun control areas. Exhibit 1: Chicago. Criminals now know that the citizens are no longer able to defend themselves with deadly force. So they are easy targets for crime. And murderers just resort to things like knives and clubs. Or, they obtain a gun illegally. Remember prohibition in the United States? It was supposed to curtail alcohol consumption and alcoholism. Read any history book; they will all tell you of the absolute FAILURE of prohibition. Do you really believe that disarming the populace will reduce crime? It won't. It MAY reduce gun crime but since no one is armed, all other forms of crime increase because the people are now vulnerable.
Basically, this is similar to when the abortion fanatics and gun control koolaidians tell everyone, "If you don't want an abortion, don't get one." Well, "If you don't want a gun, don't buy one."
MuffPlowtheFierce (Tuesday, 19 Feb 2013) ReplyIf you really want to fix football...make everyone play without pads and helmets. Demystify guns for the fools who don't understand them and get rid of those ridiculous high-capacity assemblies and CCP's. If you are going to wear a gun as a citizen, wear it. People who commit these horrible crimes are not mentally stable. Either as a result of a chemical imbalance or bad (no) parenting or abuse. They are crazy and are more than comfortable with the consequences of their actions. I'm sorry, but we should really be debating how to create a healthier citizenry than what to do with the mental deficients who end up with guns.

winterhog (Tuesday, 19 Feb 2013) ReplyFlame war... Flame war never changes. Gun ownership has almost nothing to do with crime rate. Urbanization, socioeconomic disparity, corruption level, wealth, regime stability, respect for police, gun traditions (hunting, militia, total ban enforced by occupying power etc.) are far more important. This is why Russia (strict control, high disparity and corruption, loathed police, shaky economics, strict weapons ban since Communist era) has much higher rate of crime, including gun violence than Switzerland (lax [and very specific] gun control, high wealth, low disparity and corruption, long hunting and militia traditions). Even better example is Russia and Japan - both have similar population and strict gun control but wealthier, way better organized and much less corrupt Japan has rate of murder 50 times lower (sic!) than Russia. Gun violence is 12 times lower, if I recall correctly. By the way, it is also half of gun murders in United Kingdom (data from 2010 and first half of 2011). If you stick to US alone, you can see that Vermont (virtually no control) shows the lowest (or second lowest, depending on the year) gun murder rate and murder rate in general per capita, while D.C. (one of the strictest if not the strictest control in the US) is firmly at the top of this gruesome ranking. Louisiana, with gun laws only marginally stricter than Vermont is second worst. Texas, allegedly a 'cowboy state' is roughly in the middle of the stack. So, it's clearly not the gun ownership that matters the most.
By the way - I think that federal rulings will make more harm than good. Statistics clearly show that gun laws should be tailored to the given state. Really, different states can differ much more that various European countries.
