Actually, the story behind of the slippers made from "glass" (which is a dumb choice, we agree) comes from the original version, in french, were the slippers were made of "Vair". "Vair" is a kind of Fur. The fact is the word "Vair" sound exactly like the word "Verre", which means "Glass". The whole thing got mistranslated in english and comes to a dumbass crystal slipper.

Cindrella was written by a French, and originally he probably wanted to say: "pantoufles de vair" = grey squirrel fur shoes, but it has been translated not correctly to: "pantoufles de verre" = glass shoes.

Here's an "interesting" fact: In the translation from German to English the slippers were mistakenly changed from fur to glass. The whole point of the fur slippers was that they were the only part of her poverty she could not conceal, yet the prince went with her anyway and found her through the slipper. That kind of makes a poetic sense of it, where as glass slippers is just dumb.
